The Postgraduate Department of Psychology at Government Degree College, Baramulla is a place that brings together highly motivated learners, teachers, and researchers. Established in 1972 as an Undergraduate Department, it aims at building an academic community of learners, teachers, and researchers devoted to an open, critical, and analytical study of the discipline. We apply the methods and approaches of natural and social sciences to understanding concerns and challenges associated with psychosocial, behavioral, technological, and environmental change. We provide our learners with an enriching array of educational experiences, including hands on participation in faculty-led research. Our professional and academic training enables learners to work in a broad range of settings, including medical, clinical, industry, government, private practice, and academic and research settings, among others. We also prepare learners for careers in Civil Services, HRM, Social Work, Advertising and Media.
The department has a history of nearly five decades and is well-equipped with state-of-art laboratory, latest psychological tests and equipment. The dedicated faculty uses the latest teaching methods such as multimedia preparations, role-play and experimental training. Our faculty also actively participates in academic pursuits such as publication of research papers, attending conferences and supervising project/dissertation work. Our alumni have become part of some of the prestigious organizations and institutions in India and abroad. Our students have immense potential to excel in research and different areas of specialization and are ready to contribute towards holistic development of society.
The department has a distinction of offering a Postgraduate Program in Psychology since 2018 with the intake capacity of 20 students. The department is also home to the RAAHAT Counselling-cum-Disability Resource Centre, a vital facility dedicated to providing comprehensive counselling services. This center plays an active role in supporting students, faculty, and other members of the institution, offering guidance to help them navigate and manage a wide range of personal, professional, academic, and related challenges.
