Year of establishment - 1964

Teaching at the Graduate Level in the Department of Zoology commenced since 1964 to meet the aspirations of the students of this region. The Department is headed by Prof. Syed Rehmat Shah senior Associate Professor. The mission of the Department is established to train the students desirous of learning, understanding, teaching and practicing various aspects of Life Sciences. Courses are designed to take care of both the classical and contemporary aspects of Zoology.

At all levels of our curriculum, students are engaged in learning about the functions and evolution of diverse biological systems as well as the methods by which biologists study nature. Almost every course has weekly laboratories, taught by the high qualified experienced and full-time faculty members, where students learn to become biologists by making original observations, asking questions about life processes, and designing and testing hypotheses. Scientific communication skills are emphasized in all biology courses, as students read and evaluate research articles in scientific journals, write laboratory reports according to the standards of professional scientific writing, and participate in frequent opportunities for oral presentations and critical discussion.

The curriculum is designed in such a way which prepare students to pursue careers in research and medicine or to apply their biology interests to careers as diverse as governmental policy planning, science education, public health, museum exhibition etc. Department of Zoology has undergone many upgradations from time to time with the induction of sophisticated modern Equipments and techniques amid to elevate scientific temper among the students, Zoology Department has played a pivotal role in the induction of many courses in the college as coordinating Department like Biotechnology, Environmental studies and Anthropology.

Department of Zoology has a diverse museum well established Computer Lab, the department has very recently setup Apiaries in college Campus in collaboration with the Dept. of Apiculture Govt. of Jammu And Kashmir. Zoology Department has also started lab based vocational Courses like Apiculture and Dairy Technology aimed to impart skill among the students for training and employment generation. The faculty of the department solicits technical assistance and expertise from research Institutions like SKUAST Kashmir, Department of Agriculture and Apiculture Govt. of J&K.
